Money Matters and Earning Opportunities

Are you a money savvy mom? If not, there is no better time to begin but now. Do it for yourself and for your family, and you'll surely reap great rewards in the future!

Saving for the Biggest Expense of Your Life

It's normal for Filipinos to always put aside the more important things. A lot of people keep delaying what's actually more vital for their future, such as investments. It seems easier for many to allot their savings for big expenses like a house, a car, an expensive watch, a vacation. But what about the biggest expense of our lives? Yes, the biggest expense is our retirement fund. No matter how young you are now, it is essential for you to be putting aside a certain portion of your income for the years in the future that you will not be healthy enough anymore to work.

Remember... it's not enough to simply wait for your SSS pension or the lumpsum retirement pay from your company. Given that the average inflation rate in the Philippines for the last 20 years is 6%, surely the few millions (sometimes not even!) you get from a good company will not last for the many years you will continue to live in your old age days.

Come to think of it. There are some who actually have savings in the bank. The bank! Are you aware that the savings account can only provide up to 0.5% annual interest? Every single day, the money that you keep there is losing value! What about in a time deposit, then? It will give you only 3% interest per annum. Thus, you have to look for investment vehicles that can give you more than the 6% inflation rate. What you keep in the bank should only be your emergency funds.

It is recommended that you invest at least 15-20% of your income for your retirement needs. Think hard. Do you want to belong to the majority of Filipinos who end up depending on their relatives or still working in their sixties? Or would you rather be financially independent and perhaps even a multi-millionnaire when that time comes?

Are you financially ignorant or financially literate?

Financial planning is not normally taught in school. You would be surprised to find out that even some businessmen are financially ignorant too. Yes, they may be successful in most of their ventures, but some do not know where and how to invest their earnings. Now there's a scary thought. What if global recession suddenly strikes again and their business collapses? If they end up losing everything, this is because when they were at the peak of their earning capacity, they failed to invest.

What more for employees? Yes, it's the same boat. If we do not take time to become financially literate, we will soon find ourselves struggling to make ends meet. What many do not realize is that their employers are not responsible for their future. Of course it's great to have plenty of benefits provided by the company. But it is our own personal obligation to grow our own money.
In financial planning sessions, you will get to identify your financial goals in life and to outline your dreams. Then you will be guided on how you can grow your money, given your present financial situation, so that you can meet your goals in the future and achieve your dreams. You will learn as well to allocate your funds properly. Furthermore, you will have the chance to discover just how much protection you need for your family and how much retirement fund will give you a good life in your old age. You can also plan out how to answer the educational needs of your children.

These sessions are certainly helpful. If you are an employer, you should take it upon yourself to provide such a service for your people in order to help them with their future.

Most people are afraid to face reality and would rather live for the present. What they fail to realize is that in avoiding the inevitable, they may end up in tatters one of these days.

Online Earning Opportunities for Writers

Are you a stay-at-home mom like me? Do you love to write and feel that you can actually do this for a living? Then you should try venturing into online freelance writing. It is a great way to earn a part-time income or even a full-time one. In my case, I don't regret leaving my regular employment since I am able to earn the same by just writing for just 2-3 hours a day (or sometimes 5 hours for only 2 or 3 times a week). If you can do it on a full-time basis, you can actually earn up to around P80,000 to P100,000 a month!

You can register at www.odesk.com and www.guru.com to have access to employers looking to hire writers for their projects. Such "jobs" can be short-term or long-term engagements. At first, the pay may not be that good, but as you build your profile, you can get better offers and can even set your own rates.

If you are into academic writing, you should try Academia Research or Writers.ph. Here you can get much better pay, as much as $20 per page! However, you will have to apply and send samples of your work to get in.

Now there's Brighthub.com, which had opened great doors for me as an online writer. Although they have stricter rules now, you can try it out. You can pick from a wide range of channels--- health and fitness, education, desktop publishing, computers, business, etc. They give $15 for each article with a minimum of 750 words. However, there are several guidelines that you must become familiar with first and you must follow in order for your articles to be approved and published.

You may also opt to start your own blog site and simply write for fun. Who knows? Your blog may gain popularity later on and start raking in revenue for you too. Nonetheless, there are some ways for you to improve the traffic to your site such as applying Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in your articles.

Good luck with your writing career!
